The idea of having someone you don't know come into your home and provide care for a loved one is daunting. Choosing the right person is imperative to ensure health, safety, comfort and compatiblity.
So how do you find the right person? Home care agencies do a lot of the leg work for you because they have rigorous interviewing processes, background screening (which should include local/national/driving and license searches ranging in costs from $25-$75), CPR and First Aid checks, health screening, and training. Home care companies have oversight into the quality of care being delivered by a registered nurse who ensures safety standards are met. And home care companies must be licensed with the state who makes yearly visits to ensue that the agency and its caregivers are in full compliance with the safety and care standards. Important questions to ask:
what is your caregiver hiring process?
are you Joint Commission Accredited?
What does you background screen encompass?
What are the average number of years of home care experience of your staff? (do not accept less than 2 years of home care experience)
Do I get to meet and approve the caregiver coming to my home prior to the start of service?
How do you determine which caregiver will work with my family?
What if the person doesn't work out?
Before you start care, ask to meet at least 2 caregivers and ensure that you are compatible with them. Do not be rushed or settle for someone you don't feel confident with. This person will play a key role in your health and happiness going forward, so this is an extremely important relationship. Always ask lots of questions so that you make the most informed decision you can. And always be your own healthcare advocate!
